The challenge
Following the completion of a $60 billion asset capital project development, one of the world’s largest LNG operators expected years of predictable cash flow. Instead, a double shock—COVID-19 and oil plunging below $20—shredded demand, vaporized margins, and forced a halt on several offshore developments. Leadership faced three existential questions:
Cash – How do we keep the facility solvent when every barrel sells below our break-even?
Capital – Which of the 100-plus projects in flight still deserve investment under a new, brutal price deck?
Capability – How do we keep top reservoir engineers from jumping to tech firms that now pay more and allow remote work?
With revenue collapsing and attrition spiking, “business as usual” was no longer an option.
Our approach
Working cross-functionally with site and corporate leadership, we launched a six-month program focused on two tracks:
People: Mobilised workforce-led improvement teams, shifted reservoir engineers and planners to remote collaboration overnight, and tied every initiative to career-growth metrics that stemmed attrition.
Performance: Convened subject-matter experts to rewrite operating plans, compress project timelines, and reprioritize the capital portfolio for near-term cash generation.
The results
US $500 million in net-new revenue unlocked
50% reduction in planned offshore development projects (CAPEX re-deployed or deferred)
20% jump in key employee-engagement categories—all achieved inside six months
Why it worked
Ownership at every level. By making employees the architects of cost and efficiency wins—and equipping them to work productively off-site—we created traction that neither market headwinds nor travel restrictions could stall. Leadership sponsorship kept decisions fast; field insights kept solutions real.
